Did This Book Buy Its Way Onto The New York Times Bestseller List?

quote [ How does a book with such a low Amazon ranking that’s ‘temporarily out of stock’ suddenly become the most read book in YA? ]

TLDR: The NYT bestseller list counts preorders as "sales", even if they're never actually paid for.

A bestseller list is weird. It's a very odd measure, because unlike a movie (people who buy tickets usually see it), buying a book in no guarantee of reading it. I get that it gives a certain cache to some people, but the fact that Chicken Soup for the Writer's Soul was right up there for weeks suggests that those people don't have the best instincts for good literature.

I have two friends who have both had best sellers in Canada...they sold way less than 5000 copies.

Smaller markets have smaller thresholds. Canada has ten times fewer people, it's bestseller threshold should be lower (although, personally I feel like it should just be a list - most at the top and then down to whatever).
