Indian writer comments on bias on China as a developing country

quote [ My time in China reminded me of what a smart, worldly Indian friend had said when I asked why he’d decided to move to the UK. “Everything here works as it should,” he said. ]

Interesting racial bias as a Indian, living in the UK, visits China.

“Admittedly, my experience was limited to what I saw in three of China’s biggest cities—Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Beijing”

TL;DR: Experience limited, extrapolation was not.

(But it’s still neat to read about his experience)

I've only been to three cities, but every place I went in China gave me the same feeling. Great place to take a small vacation to, terrible place to live.

I have only been to the industrial parts of China but it wasn't what I expected.
It wasn't partuicularly cheap, I was expecting cheap electronics but prices were nearly what you'd pay in Australia. The people were on average unfriendly, especially compared to the more touristy english fluent parts of Asia where everyone is always at least pretending to be happy to see a westerner. It still had a bit of the 1980s communist vibe but on the whole was much more modern than I expected. No bicycles.
They still use corruption as a way of doing business and road rules are just a suggestion.
I have never seen a single tree in China, or piece of art but then I'm not going to the nicest parts. Also they didn't seem to drink anywhere close to the amount of alcohol that I was lead to believe.

I'm from one of those big cities. They treat foreigners differently. I don't get to have that nice experience of people not haggling or trying to rip me off. But I'm also an ignorant foreign raised guy who didn't have to endure the years of hardship.
However, I feel very comfortable when I go back to visit my relatives. I feel like a belong in a way I never get in Canada. And yes, the new infrastructure is nice and clean but there are still so many, many, many, many people.
