free on-demand service does not stop pirating movies and TV shows

quote [ The study found that while the participants watched 4.6% more TV overall when they had the free on-demand service, they did not stop using BitTorrent to pirate movies and TV shows that were not included in the offering.

About $5.5 billion in revenue was lost to piracy globally last year...and it’s expected to approach $10 billion by 2022.
Shutting down the file-sharing site Megaupload increased the revenue at two movie studios studied by at least 6% ]

It's quite the dilemma, music, newspapers ...entertainment?

When the RIAA (are they still a thing) and the MPAA complain about piracy, I can't help but think of this.

Maybe they should spend their money on better things, like booze and women.

That's really the crux. Ever logged into your friend's Netflix and browsed for several minutes through garbage? What people want to watch at that moment and what is available are often not the same.

I got an urge to binge on Battlestar Galactica one month after their Netflix contract expired; to BitTorrent! I wanted to watch the greatest documentary series on WW2; The World at War, good luck finding it.

The media producers are still locked into prior generation contractual mindsets; where they will only sign rights to certain services often with exclusivity. It's their right by law of course but it does nothing to assuage the underlying appeal of digital piracy.

Piracy is getting harder these days though. I happily pay for most of my information and entertainment, but there's a lot that's simply hard to get your hands on, especially in Australia. Where do you guys do your piracy?

Piracy?...nobody here does anything illegal.

How has it gotten any harder? When do you even need to look beyond TPB, unless you want to?
eggboy said @ 6:56am GMT on 7th Dec
TPB has been spotty at best for me the last few months. Mirrors with no magnet links, infectious pop-ups, or just out of date.

I haven't been to a movie theater in ages. They need to start releasing digital copies at the same time as theatrical release and give a drm free digital copy so it can be used on a media server. Price it at $7 and i'd buy a ton. Theres no physical media cost/labor. All it would cost them is bandwidth.

You all have cost me eleventy billion dollars in revenue by not paying me eleventy billion dollars for this comment.
