Restraints, hallucinations, and forgotten pain were the norm on midcentury maternity wards

Having recently watched The Business of Being Born all I can say is, holy shit men were/are terrible to women.

I'm hardly an old fucker - less than 50 - but I remember being put into "Twilight Sleep" to have my wisdom teeth removed. I honestly don't remember it as being very problematic... I think I brought a Dead Nassau '85 cassette to listen to in my walkman ... though my kid was born sans drugs. :-)

I listened to Mötley Crüe when I got my wisdom teeth out.

Was it the same thing? I can remember Dr. Bernie really yanking hard ... but no discomfort or pain associated ... definitely some sort of dissociative state ... but I was put into it - and taken out of it - far faster than any recreational hallucinogen I've ever met.
