South Korea's Ex-President Sentenced To 24 Years For Corruption

quote [ "A court in Seoul has found former South Korean President Park Geun-hye guilty on a raft of charges in the sprawling corruption case that led to her impeachment.

She has been sentenced to 24 years in prison — effectively a life sentence for the 66-year-old. Park was also fined nearly $17 million." ]

from NYT, "Almost all of South Korea’s presidents have seen their reputations tarnished toward the end of their tenure or during their retirement because of corruption scandals involving them, their relatives or aides."

a bit of a test post. Steele- post prep is thoroughly broken for me and fails on multiple pages about this story, including this one.

I'm pretty sure it was a database hiccup. Been happening a lot lately for some reason, but my cache is keeping y'all from seeing it on the main pages.

Wait. So this is normal for South Koreans?

Presidential convictions happened twice in the 90's for presidents, and the prime minister (essentially vice president in the Korean system) resigned as part of a effort to avoid further investigation in to bribery charges.

It's almost like being governor of Illinois.

The general issue corruption and cronyism, yes.

The grooming from birth by a matriarchal cult of ultra-wealthy introverts with some really interesting agendas, not so much.

This story is so much more bizarre than most outlets report on this side of the planet.

Nice to see them convict her. Maybe there's some hope for the species yet.

Stay tuned to see if Washington can take Shining City Upon A Hill status back from Seoul.
