The little-known world of competitive Minesweeper

quote [ Because of its solitary nature, and the fact that each player is simply trying to improve his or her own score, it’s in a way a lot more similar to sports communities. There are tons of parallels between the community of competitive Rubik’s Cube solvers and the community of competitive Minesweeper board solvers, in that you’re performing an activity that seems like it’s difficult to an outsider, and eventually you learn a lot of patterns and you try to get really fast. ]

I was in the top 20 for the US for a while, And my roommate was in the top 10. he would get to the point there was one move left and wait till he beat my score by one second on all the site computers we used.

Holy shit... my best time is only 2 secs slower then the video record... maybe I should get back into it. EDIT: looking at the actual times I'm way off.

I love minesweeper, but is it just my inability, or can you sometimes be in a position where you just have to make a guess?

It's part of it. This page best explains how to handle these guesses.

Ha! I always save the guesses for last. Oops.

I think that's just how it works.

Yeah but is it possible to use strategy to avoid that situation? An element of guessing ruins it for me as a logic game.

Yeah, the fact that it can come down to just a guessing game has turned me off of vanilla Minesweeper as well.

There is a flash game I've been greatly enjoying called Mine of Sight, however, that takes the general game design and cranks it up with several different types of clues, and maintains a 'pure logic' design philosophy.

So pure logic after the first click?
Menchi said @ 6:31am GMT on 25th Apr
No, the game I linked starts with initial clues and manually constructed puzzles. Its mechanics are only tangentially related to plain minesweeper, but it scratches that itch very well for anyone who's looking for something less guessy.

What you seek is some rounds of Hexcells

Unfortunately no. There are many positions (especially in the corners) that are unavoidably luck and not skill.

I've found that is roughtly 3/5 games have a "guess".
