I don't know, I was definitely Too Old For This Shit by the time emo rolled around, but from my clueless antique outsider perspective the emos seemed more like pop-punk kids who discovered black hair dye and eyeliner than a direct evolution of the trenchcoat and Bauhaus tee-shirt goths of the 80s.

Goths don't die. They continue to shrivel (or sometimes bloat) and get increasingly pale, and if exposed to sunlight they lose bodily integrity, but it's only temporary until they can re-manifest in a suitable dark basement club. It looks very painful when it happens but that's mostly because they're such self-absorbed drama queens.
