The Curious Cons of the Man Who Wouldn’t Die

quote [ When Mark Olmsted contracted HIV, in the early 1980s, he figured the disease was a death sentence. And so he hatched a scheme to live out his last years in style—swiping credit cards, bilking insurance companies, even faking his own death. What’s the problem with some forgery, fraud, and crystal meth if you’ll soon be gone? A better question might have been: What the hell happens if you survive? ]

It's just a glimpse of the con from beyond.

There was a lot of that shit going on in the 80's.

I knew a gay couple that had both contracted HIV in the 80's, and did the same thing. CC fraud, suing businesses and jobs that even looked at them sideways for discrimination (you would be surprised how much you can scam in settlements if you peppered the courts with A-D lawsuits - most smaller businesses didn't want the "AIDS-Discrimination" albatross hung around their necks,) literally stealing from parents, friends, and relatives.

This surprises me like not at all. Having a seeming death sentence dropped in your lap really causes any morals you may have had to go away rather quickly.
