Hundreds of headstones damaged at Jewish cemetery in Philly

quote [ Action News has learned more than 500 headstones at a Jewish cemetery in the Wissinoming section of Philadelphia have been broken and overturned. ]

I'm just going to keep posting these every time they happen. Because people need to be aware that this shit is still going on, because it's too easy to read the headline and think "Oh, yeah, I remember this" and then realize, "Oh wait, that was St. Louis last week, this is Philly."

This isn't actually all that unusual. Disturbing, yes, but graveyard vandalism happens constantly. Just google graveyard vandalism. 263k hits. Why weren't people so disturbed about any of the other thousands of incidents that happened prior to November?

My theory, media trumps (no pun intended) this up as more than it may be. Ifthere were anti Semitic vandalism, then sure, but this is just one of the thousands. Nothing to indicate otherwise.

It's a big deal because of context and the extent of the vandalism:

Jewish temples and community centers across the country have received bomb threats in recent weeks. And hundreds, not a couple dozen, of headstones were damaged here. Furthermore, hate crimes of all kinds are up across the country, and this may surprise you, but we have a president whose support base is made up of racist bigots.

Sorry, i'm not saying this isn't a horrible thing, it is. But its really starting to piss me off that all of this stuff is just now being paid attention and attributed to our current political environ when its been happening forever. And it definitely has been to that extent where hundreds of headstones were vandalized.

Edit: Its right to be pissed off about it.

I really don't get your position of "terrible things have always happened and we mostly ignored it before, I'm upset that you're finally paying attention because politics." The fact of the matter is that most people don't care about something until it affects them personally. People are paying more attention to this stuff because they've never had to deal with a president before that affected the majority so significantly. Is it trite and shallow? Sure. But that doesn't mean that they shouldn't be paying attention, because other people are living in fear. You're complaining about basic human nature, but in the context of ignoring discrimination. I really don't get it at all.

You've posted in this vein twice now, and I concur that these things are serious and warrant our attention, and I appreciate your concern about the nature of these crimes. However with both your posts there seemed to be the implicit suggestion that the American President is an anti-semite.

Am I misunderstanding you?

Perhaps you could clarify.

A noticeable number of Trump supporters are anti-semitic. Trump has been fairly weak on denouncing them. Is Trump anti-semitic? I can't say for sure. But he doesn't do much to dissuade his supporters, and has in fact encouraged violence.

You probably shouldn't use quotes when your aren't actually quoting. Nonetheless, in my opinion its akin to a bunch of fires being started and then blaming a person because they moved into the neighborhood most recently without any other evidence that they were the cause. Its not that i have an issue with people being upset about these things-they should be, but the reason for their anger, as far as i can tell, is misplaced..

Edit: If there were anti-semitism writings or people were caught and they said their reasoning was because they hate jews, then i'm right there with you. But we seem to be dunking the witch and checking to see if shes still breathing afterwards as proof of her witchcraft.

Two Jewish cemeteries in two different cities in one week could be mere coincidence. But I'll just point out that among the living population of the US, Jews are only about 2%. So also considering the current spike in threats to Jewish institutions, it's also worth considering that these incidents are not mere random coincidence.

You do know that quotation marks have multiple uses? And that someone can still be a racist bigot even if they don't verbally proclaim themselves as such? These desecrations are not without context, as I've said before. Hate crimes are on the rise since November. Dozens of Jewish temples and community centers have had bomb threats called in on them since February. Anti-semitic hate groups are publicly proclaiming their support for our newly elected president, who himself has done virtually nothing to disown them. And you're more concerned with people directing their anger at Trump and his supporters than the actual discrimination that's going on.

Wow! Jump to conclusions much? If you read my comments i'm wholly abhorred by the acts. I and none of the comments i replied to ever mentioned the acts upon the jewish temples or community centers. If they did i would have said what i feel, which is that they were committed by racist cowards and theres no excuse or place for it in our country. . I'm not even going to speak against your horribly wrong insinuation towards me except to say that your words wreak of bigotry.

Edit: temples and communities were mentioned. My statement still holds that they were committed by racist cowards and theres no excuse or place for it in our country.

I'm not calling you a bigot personally. I'm just responding to your clearly stated concern of why people are upset about this.

You might have a point, but wittingly or not the vandals here have evoked a particularly dark, disturbing history of desecrating Jewish cemeteries in particular. And while cemetery vandalism may be fairly common, Jewish cemeteries are not- and that's two hit in two different cities in the span of a week. That's what indicates otherwise.

I hope you’re not suggesting that Keith Ellison had anything to do with this.

sanepride said @ 3:36pm GMT on 27th Feb
Well if you insist on bringing up random cases of political affiliation and innuendo, I'm also not suggesting that Trump or Bannon had anything to do with these incidents. No doubt their utter silence is just evidence of their total lack of culpability.

That's it?

I give you a link outlining uncontested evidence that a central leader within the DNC has clear and incontrovertible links to an avowedly and virulently racist organization, and you give me a fact-free editorial from The Daily Beast - proving what exactly?

You've got to do better than that.

Are you saying you're the same user as 4321?

"cemetery vandalism 2016" - 6,660,000 hits. Coincidence? I think not.
