This is one of the men who brought us Al-Qaida. Really. Not "The CIA created Bin Laden" bullshit. This guy and Scoop Jackson made cold warring cool for Dems. ZB was terrificly influential in getting the Muj assistance and setting it up thru Pakistan.

Well really cold warring was cool for Dems long before ZB. Don't forget about JFK and his ill-advised anti-Castro operations, not to mention initiating what was to become the war in Vietnam (greatly escalated by his cold-warring Dem successor).
Zig's efforts to aid the Mujahideen were relatively modest. I guess you can credit him and Carter for getting the ball rolling, but it was Reagan's crew that upped the ante, directly arming these guys, and there remains no actual evidence that foreign Arab fighters, including Bin Laden were beneficiaries.
If you're looking for American leadership and policy responsible for bringing us Al Qaeda, or at least the Taliban, that would be Reagan and Bush I, who basically abandoned Afghanistan after the Soviets withdrew, and left behind a perfect breeding ground for extremists.

The best thing that can be said of him is that he rose so high with the name Ziggy.

The Cold War was all about the ends justifying the means, the ends being no hot war with nukes, and containing the expanding Soviet Union. Al Qaida is relatively a pimple on our ass.
