New long distance rifle record

quote [ A sniper with Canada’s elite special forces in Iraq has shattered the world record for the longest confirmed kill shot in military history at a staggering distance of 3,450 metres. ]

Probably won't get into Guinness for this, everything else aside it's an impressive feat.

I have only one question?

After the Canadian special forces sniper pulled the trigger did he yell out "Sorry" or did he wait ten seconds
Ussmak said @ 9:05pm GMT on 22nd Jun
He didn't apologize until it was confirmed by command.

There's protocol for these things.

Yes. Mainly the possibility of being shot at, having to lug 100lbs of kit in and out without being seen and calming yourself to the point where you can accurately hit the target.

There's a lot more than squeezing the trigger.

I'm all for ISIS being destroyed, but I can also appreciate it when my enemy pulls off an impressive feat of combat.

If I was truly anti-semitic then I would have absolutely no qualms in telling you so.

In fact I support Israel's COMPLETE annexation of Palestine. So technically I'm more of an Islamophobe in your narrow world-view than anything else.

It's quite telling though that you have such a chip on your shoulder if anyone even utters the word Jew.

You know Mossad itself hired a man by the name of Otto Skorzeny who was a completely unapologetic Nazi, right? A man who was also a completely unapologetic murderer and sociopath. If the most fervent of God's Chosen People can get by with letting Hitler's personal killing machine do their dirty work for them, then I think you can be man enough to see me halfway on why this website is nowhere near the bastion of discussion you fucks like to pretend it is.

Having been through Israel a few times I agree with the comment on making the Occupied territories just part of Israel. At least Gaza for sure, the WB seems to have become a little more self sufficient and a little less crazy than when Arafat was alive. The issue for many of the people within Israel with this approach is the "bomb in the womb" hyperbole, which can be paraphrased as Israel can be a Jewish State or a Democratic State, but not both, if they were to absorb the significant non-Jewish populations of the OTs.

The status quo is not sustainable though, and the proposed two-state solution won't work either, any more than the proposed separation of Quebec from Canada, or Texas from the US.
foobar said @ 6:24am GMT on 23rd Jun

You have a reputation for stereotyping and quickly escalating any blow-back to ad hominem attacks. There are others, including a few on this thread, who have a reputation for the same.

I normally stop paying attention *to the thread* after the first signs of that (jew-x, snowflake, cocksucker). Usually I chalk it up to drunk posting, which I'm not innocent of. If I eventually get the feeling that's just a person's normal MO, I normally stop paying attention to the poster/commenter. I'm too damn old to read and respond to drunk rants anymore.

The karma system itself has nothing to do with that. I personally haven't downmodded any of the comments on this post, but that's mostly because I haven't had any beer in a few days.
sanepride said @ 8:17pm GMT on 22nd Jun [Score:1 Underrated]
Drunk-posted or not, there's a definite difference between a general ad-hominem and actual hate-speech slurs, uttered to make a political point. This is the line Ussmak has crossed. He could have issued a mea-culpa, offered an excuse for being drunk or overly worked-up or whatever. Instead he's doubled-down, even emphasized the sentiment. Folks here can mod this kind of thing as they see fit, but I for one refuse to let it stand. The beauty of unfettered free speech is it not only allows a forum for hate speech, but it also allows us to shout it down.
machpi said @ 11:59pm GMT on 22nd Jun
It's difficult to shout down a troll. Which is another charm of the karma system: it's a volume knob, and those who don't know how to play well with others get turned down sooner or later. And another reason I like the system is that it's not as final as a ban, so offenders can rehabilitate themselves at any time if they so desire.

Rehabs happened occasionally on old SE (eg madpride).

For comparison, another (job-oriented) forum I occasionally post on, until recently had no comment-modding system at all, and no way to 'ignore' commenters. It could become a vicious free-for-all on political threads.

A few months ago, 'liking' comments came online, along with an 'ignore' feature. The 'liking' feature is one step above worthless. The 'ignore' feature has been worth its weight in gold. The downside to it, though, is that there is zero chance of rehab in such a system; the ignored commenters and their comments just disappear.

What I'm trying to say is that SE's karma system is pretty damn good in a lot of ways.

sanepride said @ 2:23am GMT on 23rd Jun
I'm fine with the karma system (I can say from my lofty #3 ranking), and I don't even mind the trolls so much.
It's mainly this guy who overtly blames the Jews his political frustrations....
As I recall Sensible Election had a '-1 You're a Nazi' mod. Sure would be handy to have that option now. Not holding out much hope of 'rehab', despite my even offering him an easy out.

Personally, I'd like the ability to disable the small font/hiding for downmodded comments; I don't have delicate eyeballs that need protecting from salty talk.

For me, the value of the karma system is that people can give social feedback on posts or comments without filling the thread with replies that don't contribute to the conversation. It's an elegant solution to the problem you used to get on message boards where you'd click on a thread with a hundred comments expecting to read a lively discussion only to find it was one guy cracking a joke and 99 people people going "haha" or "LOL".

You have a point. The trick is not to take it personally (which is impossible when drunk or stoned). Just because the font gets littler and littler, or goes away at '5' and I have to give it a resurrection click, doesn't prevent me from reading the comment. And checking to see who downmodded it is its own entertainment.

Also: for the vast majority of 'resurrection click' comments, the reason is obvious: a reasoned argument or observation has degenerated into vapid name-calling. If the comment has been down-modded less than 5, there's still a good chance it's just a run-of-the-mill argument worth a read. So in that respect, the karma system does have value for me.
