James Franco Has Made a Movie About the Worst Movie Ever Made, and It Looks Amazing James Franco as Tommy Wiseau in 'The Disaster Artist'. By Rae Alexandra JULY 18, 2017 SHARE There are many legendary movies that have used San Francisco’s beautiful landscape as a backdrop: Hitchcock’s Vertigo, Eastwood’s Dirty Harry, McQueen’s Bullitt, and many, many more that are far too numerable to list here. (That’s what the extremely handy book, Celluloid San Francisco: The Film Lover’s Guide to Bay Area Movie Locations is for.) Back in 2003 though, an enigmatic figure by the name of Tommy Wiseau made a movie in the city that has reached legendary status for all of the wrong reasons. The Room is widely considered one of the worst films of all time, and therefore — especially in San Francisco — one of the most beloved on the cult circuit. Wiseau wrote, directed, and acted in The Room, and the results were, to put it mildly, completely disastrous. The Room has proved to be the gift that keeps on giving ever since its initial release. If you’ve yet to see it, keep your eye on independent movie theaters all over the Bay Area; it will be showing in at least one of them relatively soon, because it always is. This morning though, a most exciting development emerged online: James Franco is starring as Wiseau in a movie about the making of The Room, alongside his BFF, Seth Rogen. Based on the first teaser, it looks damn funny too: Renowned workaholic Franco has a keen eye for, and understanding of, all forms of schlocky entertainment. Lest we forget that he was a regular guest star on daytime soap, General Hospital, between 2009 and 2012. Over the course of 53 episodes, Franco played a serial killer/ graffiti guy/ modern artist named (ready?) Franco, who terrorized the city of Port Charles, in particular his long-lost brother, Jason. It is honestly one of the greatest things James Franco has ever done. Point being, if anyone can do the legend that is Tommy Wiseau justice, it’s James Franco. Sadly, we have to wait until December 8, 2017 for The Disaster Artist to hit theaters.
