Who’s Who? Who Cares

quote [ How the “Who’s Who” concept of reference books devolved from a genuinely useful idea into a very costly form of vanity publishing. ]

Who are you?
Who, who, who, who?

Totally thought this was going to be about the next doctor who being female...

I think that if that had happened, I would have heard about it.

I guess it is a good sign that we are making less of a big deal about this.

I remember getting mailers in high school for this crap. Sends us your biography (and your money!) and we'll make sure the world knows how important you are! I never considered that maybe at some point in history this wasn't a scam.

When a gentleman came to the door of Earl and Lady Whittlingford to ask for their daughter's hand in marriage, the Earl would waste no time looking up the parentage of the fellow in Who's Who.

Or that is how I always imagined goings on amongst the upper-crust. My fantasies have been rather dashed by the article.

I don't think I've even heard the expression used in a decade or two.

Didn't that just devolve into how high your name registers in a google search?

My name is the first result in a Google search of my name.

Same for me, though it's not me, it's some side character on one of the CSI shows.

I was nominated to be in this (the regular who's who one). I just assumed it was spam, having never heard of it, even after their follow up email. Knowing that I'm not actually notable enough to be included in such a thing, it would be embarrassing to appear in it, having submitted a bio as though I thought I was.

Edit: I frequently get solicited to write papers and book chapters for journals completely unrelated to my actual expertise (but rarely in it), so being "who's who" just fell in with that lot of auto-solicitations in my mind.
