Still not sure how I feel about Ready Player One. But I'm totally go for Ragnarok. :D

I think no matter what, especially you, will hate it, in that it's probably the Hacker's version of VR.

I can totally understand why you might think that, and you might end up being right, but I'm really rather ambivalent about the whole movie. The book was an okay read, but it was mostly nostalgia porn that I don't have any sort of strong feelings about. Ya know? It's not like with Dark Tower where I named my cat after a character or anything.

Plus, I feel pretty disconnected from the whole mainstream VR community that's got a collective hard on for this movie. Besides hype about new hardware, we've got much different interests and reasons for wanting VR. Like you've seen how my posts go down here, my thoughts have yet to have any sort of resonance with others. Part of that is my esoteric interests and part of it is because Facebook's foray in the VR arena poisoned the well of discourse. There are certain concerns like privacy and data collection (which are important topics given VR's inherent intrusiveness) that you can't talk about now without being written off as an Oculus hater by about a third of the community.

I'm hoping they play the VR straight, like in eXistenZ; no goofy glows, no pixelation artifacts, no HUD. The point is that it's so immersive you forget it's not real. If a text based MUD can do that to you, full-on 360 degree, interactive, photoreal environments certainly can.

Check out this landscape construction demo in the Unreal 4 render engine. Jump to close to the end for the full effect. Then imagine what it will be like in another ten or twenty years.

Have you tried the vive or the rift yet?
midden said @ 2:31pm GMT on 24th Jul
I tested a very impressive headset a few months ago, perhaps the Rift. Unfortunately, the content wasn't all that interesting; it was the surface of the Earth, but projected onto a sphere from the inside. They didn't have a full tracking setup, so it was just head orientation.

Gus and Shawn Are Getting Back in Shape

This is what I'm happy about.

E: I'm really glad that mis-paste was a cat pic and not something bad.

NSFW?

Poor DC. Their Justice League trailer was released on youtube with a 6 hour headstart and the Thor movie has already reached the number one trending spot and is within 2 million views of surpassing JL.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but the inappropriate booming techno/rock music and Zack Snyder speed ramping effects just completely take me out of these DC movies.
steele said @ 4:13pm GMT on 23rd Jul
Yeah, Wonder Woman has been the best of them and even it had its issues. DC just doesn't seem to have access to Directors that understand how to make these things.

The robots in the Pacific Rim sequel have a very different look/physics to the ones in the original. More Ironman than Iron Giant this time. Not that the first movie was a classic or anything, but it had its moments and at least the mecha looked big and heavy on screen.
