I thought that was exactly the point: exposing the (literal, in this case) hollowness of the pixie dream girl fantasy. This is brought to a fine point when K encounters the giant advertising billboard version of his digital girlfriend, after his personal copy has been destroyed, and she repeats many of the same phrases and gestures his personal version had done previously in what were supposed to be personal, intimate moments. The holographic dream girl is also show to be completely ineffectual when he needs a real person the most, after his crash and when he and Deckard are attacked by the Wallace Corp. thugs. What he needs are allies like the police chief and the resistance leader.

As a side question, when does everyone take down holiday decorations (if you put them up)?
