This one hurt. Ages ago, I was traveling from Seattle (my ancestral home) to Denver (The paradise I'd always needed but did not yet know it) after having had my heart ripped out by a scurrilous creature of lust and evil (Oh yes johnny, this is a break up story!). I had secured living arrangements in my newly adopted city and was looking forward to the trip when that savage succubus broke me. This compounded with a host of other issues that lead to a deep deep depression served to make this endeavor an much more difficult proposition. Seattle to Denver is a long drive, about 20 hours. Not so bad when you have a friend to share the trip with. Interminable when otherwise. It is scenic but in a singularly lonely manor when all of your life is stuck in the back of the run down Uhaul you've rented. Bourdain was that friend. I plopped into my very serviceable discman both of the books he had written ( Kitchen Confidential and A Cooks Tour) that I had previously acquired through less than legal means prior to the trip. I was emotionally destitute and his voice was literally the only thing that made that trip bearable. I have no doubt I'd have met a voluntary end of my own without him narrating the foods of his youth and the grotesqueness of his industry.. Bon Voyage you Cunty Genius.
