Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History
by Sidney W. Mintz (A riveting novel about the role of sugar both economically, nutritionally, and socially in the industrialized world, and the trade triangle between Europe/Africa/the Caribbean/America. It's a little dry at times, but the insights are facinating.) |

Similarly, 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created by Charles Mann (the follow up to his fascinating 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus), spends quite a bit of time exploring the sugar trade and its tremendous impact on world history and culture. It is also a bit dryer than the previous, 1491, but still fascinating and enlightening.
