How WeChat came to rule China

quote [ The multipurpose messaging app is becoming the nation’s ID system ]

Posted because I always wanted to post something under the "dystopian violence" tag, and because this scares more than just about anything else I've read about recently.

The Verge piece is relatively measured, but once you start thinking it through to the logical endgame the implications are truly chilling.

If you're scared, maybe you missed the part where you can play games on WeChat and that respecting user privacy is important to them! Nothing to see here, don't call us, we'll kick your door downcall you if we need anything.

WeChat is what facebook aspires to be. Fb may have better algorithms though. I don't have the experience to say, but I know fb spends some hardcore cash on what's going on in their users' heads. Like literally.
