quote [ This piece has been brewing in my head over the last few years as I’ve watched a dramatic shift happen. In a very generous framing of this dynamic, a growing number of people are questioning: what possesses someone to still wear a mask, aren’t they just anxious and paranoid?! This has created tension in families, partnerships, friendships, workplaces, social groups, and other communities. Since the answer is unclear to many, I want to address this.
And I say all this as a mental health professional who specializes in working with the chronically ill and disabled communities; is trained to recognize the impacts of trauma, cognitive biases, and thought distortions; with education and training in research methodology who has poured over infectious disease research for several years; who has lived with Long COVID and been part of this community for 5 years; and who has welcomed far too many new faces to this community in recent years. ] Pretty decent piece. Covers most of the bases.

"Maybe they enjoy not being sick."
And there it is, for me at least. I got COVID in June/July 2020. Vaccinated that September. I have NOT been sick since. Masked up whenever I'm out and about with people. I vastly prefer it, really, aside from when my glasses fog up in the middle of the Costco. |

The glasses fogging up is really annoying, especially in winter time.

Same, haven't been sick since I started masking full time. Plus, my first Covid infection fucked me up in a bunch of "minor" but weird ways. I still get headaches almost daily. I'd really rather not find out what a second infection would do.
Also, I suspect brain damage from covid is causing the general population to lose its mind. Lot of people's memories are fucked. |

This is exactly it for me... Until this past Christmas, I hadn't had so much as a sniffle since the winter before COVID.
I got a simple cold a few days after Christmas, and it was just like before COVID, awful. After a week, the cold was mostly gone, but I still had a cough and felt miserable for almost a month and a half. Like everybody else, I used to deal with a basic cold once a year or so before COVID. Life is so much better when you don't have to suffer through that shit. Why do we put up with the common cold? Masks work, and I really don't think I'm gonna go back. |

Since my years in Japan seeing someone wearing a mask isn't something unusual to me anymore.

Sadly, the US has adopted the opposite approach to Japan and people are getting harassed even by medical staff at places like chemo clinics and stuff.
