quote [ Walter Becker, guitarist, bassist and co-writer for the sophisticated, dark-humored band Steely Dan, has died. He was 67. ]
They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast

I think Aja was the second album I ever bought, right after Pete Townshend's Empty Glass. Must have been 1979 or 80. I'm pretty sure I own the entire Steely Dan and solo Donald Fagen CD discography. It weirds me out when I hear them played in grocery stores or shopping malls.
edit: I'm surprised Countdown to Ecstasy was a flop. Bodhisattva was one of my favorite songs in high school, plus Showbiz Kids and My Old School seemed like hits to my early teens, 1980s sensibilities. Of course, that was a decade after the album's release, so I suppose the other five albums that had come out after it had some retroactive influence. Damn, the man had such style. There's so much unappreciated complexity and sophistication in Steely Dan's work.
