Today We Celebrate the Time Canada Burned Down the White House

quote [ Two hundred years ago today, a 36-year old America declared war, for the second time, against Great Britainn. The plan was to conquer Canada and wrest North America for the United States once and for all. But, by pretty much all measures, the war was a total mess…

It began in confusion, with the United States declaring hostilities unaware that one of its major war aims was already addressed. And it ended that way, too, with a last, pointless battle fought weeks after a peace treaty was signed. Civilians on both sides suffered, there were horrible massacres, and even more bungling by generals than is customary in warfare. ]

Do we need to come down there again?

I could tell the author was Canadian.
1) Canada did not burn the white house. British regular forces burnt the white house. There were no militia troops from either upper and lower Canada or the maritimes.
2) Americans do not use the term First Nations.

I live in southern California and I do here First Nations sometimes. Mostly white people being super PC. Everyone I know that actually goes to the powwows calls themselves indians or whatever tribe they are part of. They are ridiculously chill and I've never seen any of them get mad about anything.

Is there another term? I have only ever heard first nation used.

Native American, American Indian, Alaska native, etc.

Native American and American Indian imply a wider range of people. I meant more was there a term that explicitly referred to a tribal group that changed use like the division over whether Sioux confederacy or the language group like Lakota took precedence for preferred terms.

(Unless I am seriously miss understanding the scope of who the term first nation applys to.)

First Nations is a term used to describe the indigenous people of Canada, excluding Inuit and Metis

It was so awkward when I saw this in a Canadian movie theater.
And not one person said sorry.

Why are we celebrating it on this particular day?

Except that it wasn't 200 years ago today.

It was on that date 200 years ago? I dunno man. I just work here.

Well, the article was written on June 18, 2012, the anniversary of when the war started. The White House burned on Aug 24, 1814. So the answer is "we aren't, but since everything in the article says "today" with no context it's easy to be misled."
foobar said @ 2:33am GMT on 18th Oct
There's no reason we can't celebrate it today, too.

The NRA has been preparing for this

As foretold in the great prophecy/film: Canadian Bacon.
