Too bad he couldn't hang on another few years. This looks very promising.

Well, now he can join Albert in taking care of the life timers, and hopefully he will be a better cook.

The BBC piece answered my unasked question...

Despite campaigning for assisted suicide after his diagnosis, Sir Terry's publishers said he did not take his own life.

That's a shame. While I'm sure he had enough time to come to terms with his impending death, I always got the impression he'd rather it was on his own terms (given the circumstances). On the other hand he died with the knowledge that thousands if not millions of people adored him and his artistic output, which is nice.

Working my way through chronologically, I'm soon to start #24 The Fifth Elephant. Though blending altogether somewhat, l tend toward Granny Weatherwax.

I love Granny Weatherwax. Can't wait to share Tiffany Aching with my nieces.

Funny how a lot of people fall into a Guards or a Witches camp. I have nothing against Vimes and his crew, but if I had the choice I'd much rather be living in a Lancre cottage, letting my Mind Wander.
steele said @ 7:31pm GMT on 12th Mar
I'm in both camps and you just reminded me that one of my nieces is old enough for The World of Poo! :D

I eventually outgrew his writing, but I read at least 20-25 of the Discworld novels before that happened. Personally, I felt they became a bit too formulaic, but they were still always charming, funny and fun to read. First Banks, now Pratchett, the authors I grew up on are all going away

If you live long enough, you'll see them all go that way.

I've not started his and Baxter's The Long Mars book

Finished the first two....

I somehow skipped The Long War and didn't notice until about half way through The Long Mars. I don't feel like I actually missed all that much. The books seems much more Baxter-driven rather than Pratchett, and that is not a compliment.

Terribly sad - was my favorite author for years. He was so unwell at the end, however. Will miss him a great deal.

DON'T THINK OF IT AS DYING. JUST THINK OF IT AS LEAVING EARLY TO AVOID THE RUSH.

And thus do we commend him to the care of the Reaper Man.

Damn! But having seen my mum go through dementia for years, it's perhaps a blessing that he didn't live for decades with the disease. Losing my icons is a tough business.

Well bugger.
Dienes said @ 12:23am GMT on 13th Mar
I outgrew his novels, but he was clearly a delightful, talented, intelligent writer with a great sense of humor.

That he was ultimately killed by a disease that slowly ate away his brilliance is proof that there is no divine justice.

"Outgrew?"

Have you not read any of the Science of Discworld novels? How about Going Postal or Making Money? How do you outgrow stories with insights like this:

'Belief' as according to Death

"Outgrew," indeed.

I actually didn't know about those, and just added them to my reading list for this year. Thanks!

"Yes?"
"I GAVE YOU QUITE A STOP.”
