You might have stumbled across my name recently in relation to a petition about "Smoker Stigma."
I’m writing to give you the story behind the story.
I know that petition looked a bit left-field. Truth be told, it was a stress test. I’m an ex-cane cutter from Bundaberg, not a lobbyist. I wanted to test the plumbing of the parliamentary system with a "stupid" (or at least controversial) question first, just to see if a regular bloke could actually get a response from Canberra.
Now that I’ve tested the pipes, I’m sending through the main event.
I’ve just launched Caring4Change. This is the fight that actually matters. There are 2.65 million unpaid carers in Australia forming a "Shadow Workforce" that saves the economy billions. We are petitioning for a Workforce Solution, not a handout.
We are demanding:
Skills Recognition: A mechanism for TAFE to recognize the medical/admin skills we learn at home so we can transition into paid work.
Superannuation: Because right now, we retire into poverty despite working harder than most.
I figured I’d make some noise with the first petition so people would pay attention to the second one. You don't get a "Fair Go" these days unless you are willing to rattle the cage a bit.
I’d love for you to take a look at the real proposal.
