Cameron's World

quote [ In an age where we interact primarily with branded and marketed web content, Cameron’s World is a tribute to the lost days of unrefined self-expression on the Internet. This project recalls the visual aesthetics from an era when it was expected that personal spaces would always be under construction. ]

Yes, that's what the world wide web looks like.

That is an amazing labor of love. I had forgotten about "rings" until I saw the link/badge for "The Rainbow Dragon Ring".

Rainbow Dragon Ring

I can't have been the only person to do those role play dragon adoption websites. So many animated gifs, so many second person POVs. It was a simpler time.

That's what the Rainbow Dragon Ring was? Wow. Yes, it seems all so innocent, now, even the total wacko conspiracy sites were quaint.

I was thinking of the Online Journaling Rings. You know, those things that existed before Blogs, before search engines were much use and the best way to find new stuff online was using direct links from sites you had already discovered. All you really needed to know were a half dozen html tags and a simple ftp client and you could be sharing your angst with new friends in astonishingly far away places.

It feels kind of like how I imagine my parents as kids gathering around the radio to listen to The Green Hornet or Amos & Andy.

Are you referring to webrings?
midden said @ 10:56pm GMT on 20th Aug
Yup, that's what I was thinking of. There were rings for just about everything, but it seemed like the most socially tempestuous ones were journaling rings.

You may be old, but you can never be too old.
