"This is my jail"

quote [ “Every month, he text what I made. Like a profit of what I made. Like everything added on. And it came out to, um . . . My profit was fifteen thousand eight hundred and something. . . . That ain’t bad for a whole month. A lot of people don’t make that in a month.” ]

Longish New Yorker piece about a Baltimore jail. If it were season 6 of The Wire, you would say the show had jumped the shark.

It's bad enough that the American judicial system is set up for punishment as opposed to rehabilitation. But if you can sire five children by four different women while behind bars, you're not even being punished.

Also, too: not even the Communists are Communist any more. How do the teachings of Marx keep popping up in strange little backwaters (such as prison), like a virus that won't quite die out?

The new Republican governor of Maryland said in 2015 that the jail would be closed, prisoners & staff reassigned, and that doing so would save the taxpayers some money. As far as I can tell, it's still open and "doing business," as it were.

I'm guessing that he can't find any privately-run prisons willing to take the inmates, but that's just a guess.
