Random Library II: Fiction Boogaloo

Fiction this time, and with a handy-dandy DNS redirection service behind it so the link doesn't die when my IP changes.

A few people have mentioned sharing their libraries as well. Here are some quick instructions:

1) Get all your books into Calibre. I consider it essential that you have accurate titles/author/covers. Calibre supports libraries held on cloud services as well, but don't ask me how it works. If your library is all purchased and has DRM, hunt down and install the DeDRM plugin, then re-add the protected books.

2) Forward a port of your choice by whatever means you need to do so.

3) From the Calibre main screen, go to Preferences > Sharing Over the Net, put the forwarded port in the appropriate box, tick "Run server automatically when Calibre starts", Apply, and restart Calibre.

4) Sign up for a dynamic DNS service like No-IP. The free option is plenty good enough. Get it set up with your choice of hostname and pointed appropriately at your computer.

5) Share the link in the format of http://[your shiny new hostname]:[your forwarded port], eg, http://randomlibrary.no-ip.org:6001

I'm afraid all my books are on paper, so I can't share them over the internet. I like the idea of this, though.

Ever heard about a scanner Mech? Just kidding. ;)

Not working? At least I can't open it.

That's odd. There's nothing on my end, though, everyone else has been able to access it.

I guess it's the firewall here at work. I'll try again when I get home.

Worked for me. We have similar tastes, I will likely raid tomorrow. I may have a dump to share as well...

Out of curiosity is everything in .epub format? Not a big deal to convert it if need be of course.

I have about 8GB worth of books in .mobi format on a Box account, maybe I should look in to doing something like this for you guys too.

Yeah, I prefer epubs. But, as you said, conversion is cake, just use Calibre.

For that matter, if you have everything in Calibre already, I can give you instructions on how to set up the Calibre Content Server so you can share it like mine...

I don't have it in Calibre, no. But I use the program and have everything also stored on my desktop.

Great library rndm, wish I had more time to read.
HoZay said @ 4:31am GMT on 18th Apr
BTW, your previous link to the non-fiction library is not loading now.
rndmnmbr said @ 4:51am GMT on 18th Apr
Yeah, sorry, due to the way Calibre works and the way I have it split up, only one library at a time can serve books.
HoZay said @ 6:20am GMT on 18th Apr
Oh well. I snooze, I lose.
rndmnmbr said @ 7:27am GMT on 18th Apr
I'll PM you the next time I swap back.
