Simulated Fish Sex: It's Educational!

quote [ "In a new report published in the journal Nature, scientists shared their discovery that the first animals to have sexual intercourse did so by boning side to side instead of missionary style. The fish creatures were so daunted by their 'cumbersome genitalia' that this was the only way they could procreate." ]

Some light science to start your week. Labelled NSFW because you (edit: probably) wouldn't want anyone to see you watching the video.

How romantic, they were holding hands. Well, snails also do it sideways, and being hermaphrodites, one tries to castrate the other in order to impregnate it without ending up with a bunch of babies itself.

So exactly the same as humans other than the hermaphrodite part. Gotcha.

OTHER than the hermaphrodite part?

Err, yeah. Other than.

I guess it depends on how feminine is your wife. Or gramatics.

Except that the castrating part is a wife, not another snail.

Yeah, I'm wondering if they've maybe misread the fossil record here.

Given the lack of armor on the female at the side there, and the bony, pointy and sideways aligned penis, I'm thinking these fish may have done it bedbug style and not so much cuddle square-dance style.

Okay, 'bedbug style.' I'm a asking for that when my wife comes home from her trip.

I was puzzled until I realized this is specifically about penetrative intercourse, not sexual reproduction. Much simpler animals have been reproducing sexually a heck of a lot longer than 380 million years.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if various soft-bodied animals had been using intercourse a lot longer, too, but their equipment doesn't fossilize so well.

...and of course, I should throw in some joke about the ladies being daunted by my cumbersome genitalia.

I admit I shared it mostly for the video, which is amusing.
