Of course Donald Trump looked directly into the sun

quote [ Yes, our devil-may-care commander in chief did the thing he is best at and ignored the absolute unyielding consensus recommendation of the world’s doctors, scientists, and subject experts, and looked directly into the blinding motherfucking sun during the eclipse. Perhaps he did not understand the rationale behind the specially tinted glasses, or he merely did not think it applied to him; perhaps he forgot, or thought himself stronger than the sun itself. It really doesn’t matter. It was fate fulfilling itself, because of course if there is one single thing that everyone knows about the eclipse—you shouldn’t look directly at it—Donald Trump would do it.

Then do it a second time. ]

WTF is The Onion even supposed to write about now?

So... basically traffic in Toronto is what it would be like if there was a perma-eclipse anywhere else.
Dienes said @ 10:42pm GMT on 21st Aug
Is there even a point to looking when its just 81% totality? I mean, its still bright enough that you're just going to see the same searing light you'd see any other day. You need the glasses or a pinhole camera to see anything different. So not only did he risk his sight doing something stupid, he did it for no reason and nothing to gain from it.

Which, I suppose, shouldn't be a surprise.

I don't know - we had about 65% peak where I am and it was definitely a little eerie. Not as dramatic as totality, for sure, but it still felt like you weren't quite on the right planet. Definitely nothing to be gained by staring into the sun without dark glass, of course... that's just stupid.

We had 86% and I totally agree with you looking around outside was weird and otherworldly. Sorry, I was unclear.

If you looked at the sun itself with the naked eye, the actual risky thing, it wouldn't look any different or special.

Yeah, Trump's a clown, no doubt!

The light at 85% of total should be what broad normal daylight is. I like that amount of light.

I got to see totality! I was an hour's drive North of where I live and a 5 hour drive back. It was TOTALITY AWESOME! My life is now complete except for going into Earth orbit. It was also the nicest, most polite traffic jam I've ever been in.

Oh yeah, and Trump is an idiot.
Bruceski said @ 3:55am GMT on 22nd Aug
My parents and I bracketed totality (I live a bit north, they live a bit south) so I visited them for the week. We snuck up to Prineville by back roads and saw the same eclipse as all those partygoers with no fee or wait. Empty road up, traffic going at speed on the way back, it was great.

Absolutely amazing. Worth every penny.

While I dislike the Grand Cheeto, and I must say that regardless of the idiot in question, news should always be neutral or impartial.

Here's a video of how it actually went:

foobar said @ 4:11pm GMT on 22nd Aug
I'm not seeing the issue. The video shows he had to be told to stop looking directly at it.
krupa said @ 1:37pm GMT on 23rd Aug
Fair enough.

My personal opinion, whoever told him that should've been vewy vewy quiet.
