This has been a common sentiment on Tumblr all day. It's... amazing.

I logged into my main Tumblr this morning to see some quick random breasts (as one does), and saw the post from the Tumblr staff. I'm not sure how my main, NSFW blog will be affected - I post and reblog everything that's of interest to me, which happens to include naked women and porny imagery/gifs - but that's not all my blog is. Tumblr's post wasn't really clear as to this, so I don't know if they're just gonna delete my blog or X out all the now-banned imagery or what. I've been there for 8 damn years - that's a lot of stuff to comb through.

Sounds to me like a fairly aggressive and comprehensive purge.

My takeaway is that Tumblr has been trying to ditch the porn since Verizon bought Yahoo. It's awfully hard to monetize what is essentially one of the leading porn sites on the internet. This recent child porn incident led to the Tumblr app getting pulled by Apple, so it's given them the excuse they need.

Verizon will try to pivot the site into a new Livejournal, and lure advertisers with their now-clean content... and when that inevitably fails, they'll just shut it down and add it to the write-off they're having with the rest of Yahoo.

And that is that, Verizon took a sucker's bet with Yahoo, and if they can't make its pieces make money in a hurry then they're getting the axe to staunch the bleeding. The porn is getting in the way of the advertising they need to make that happen, so it has to go, and now they have their excuse.

Why does Tumblr want to reduce their traffic?

They want to increase their traffic and become flickr/ instagram.

I'm glad at least someone is thinking of the children!

for the last 5 years I haven't seen any use for tumblr beyond porn, as it was one of the only platforms that doesn't just randomly shut down pages for adult film performers like instagram does. I dunno what user group they're looking to reconnect with- once the various types of porn are gone there isn't going to be anything left but two harry potter fan blogs.

Going through my blog is a trip, the algorithm flagging things as explicit has about 3 times as many false positives, and is is only catching a tenth of all content it looks to be targeting.

The question, of course, is WHERE.... ;)

There's also a niche following of Porn Music Videos (PMVs) with weekly/monthly contests synced to porn scenes and a sub-category called "cock hero" (It's like guitar hero, but for jerking off to see if you can last through the entire video) that uses copyrighted music, but the RIAA couldn't be bothered to copystrike them.
