The Day the Music Burned

I follow the music industry fairly closely, particularly the technology and business of studio recording, and I was not aware of the impact of the fire described in the NY Times. The loss of so many master recordings makes me sad.

Link is to a summary article on the Vice website - a link to the original longer article in the New York Times is in the first sentence of the Vice article.

My only criticism of the article is that it makes the loss of digital master recordings look like the equivalent of the loss of master recordings on magnetic tape. While copies from magnetic tape involve generational loss, in theory digital copies are identical, assuming you use the same file type. I assume that those copies were not made, accounting for the loss.

There's a lot of hyperbole in that article and some downright falsehoods. It's still a shame to lose all those masters, though.
