Colin Powell, a former secretary of state, dies at 84

quote [ Powell's family said that he died Monday of complications from COVID-19, despite being fully vaccinated. Powell served as secretary of state under George W. Bush. ]

Oppsie doodles. He wasn’t the worst perhaps but absolutely still part of the problem.

I didn’t think the leopard would eat MY face, kinda.

That should say Mỹ Lai massacre. And it wasn't his unit, one he was supposed to be investigating. I'm sure NPR just forgot to mention that.

BBC didn't tho.💁‍♂️😅
Colin Powell: From Vietnam vet to secretary of state

The US secretary of state whose support for George W Bush gave credibility to the 2003 Iraq invasion.

FWIW, he did not die a Republican.

Reminds me of Sammy the Bull explaining how he wasn't really a rat because Gotti was going to betray him. Neither of those assholes had any problem doing what they did until they realized that it was costing more than it got them, at which point they explain how they were never really like all those other guys that they worked with and for, for their entire life.

He certainly was a human being and I am trying to not do things like rejoice in the deaths of others. I am sorry he died of COVID as it sounds like a shitty way to go and lacks sufficient irony.

I remember before 9-11-01, there was an incident with a US spy plane going down in or very near Chinese territory, and there was a certain amount of tension, and i said to a very alarmed person that it would be OK because Bush was listening to Collin. I bought the idea that he was a sobering influence to modify the actions of his boss wisely.(at that time i was stupider, and believed that bosses hire people to tell them when they are wrong...)

Then came 9-11-01 and the Invasion of Iraq. Powell's(hereafter Colon Bowel) WHOLE SCHTICK was he was a Vietnam vet who would not sell out his brother soldiers for, imho, personal gain in career terms. Never mind the million+ dead Iraqis. He chose to sell the war that he later said he doubted at the time. What makes anyone think this was any different than the entire rest of his career?

In some ways, his later attempts at rehabilitation make him worse as much as they make him better, more imo, but i am a prick like that. You want to say you REALLY BELIEVED...i may doubt you, but i will call you stupid rather than evil. You want to tell me that you really didn't believe and did it anyway, just in case, i am less sympathetic.

He was "a man of faith" apparently. I wonder what kind of conversation he is having now.

The idea that anyone believed the war in Iraq was genuine is automatically being disingenuous. As an idiot in my twenties, it was completely transparent.

Exhibit 1 - If Iraq has Weapons of Mass Destruction - Who fucking cares. So do we. And they had nothing to do with 9/11. So... why are we even talking about this shit?

There are and were no good faith pro-Iraq-war actors - only plutocrats, fascists or idiots.

How very simplistic. You'd be astounded what people can really believe. For instance, you believe what you said, even though, like the WMD claims, contradictory evidence was and is widely and easily available that people did believe, whatever your clearly ideological view(as clearly ideological as theirs) may be. I don't believe it, but I do not think you are dissembling, I just think you are wrong. There's a difference.

I mean, yes, I was using quite a bit of hyperbole there. And mainly directed at people in power with unrestricted access to the data provided them.
WeiYang said @ 12:58am GMT on 20th Oct
Fair enough, but you may be giving people in power too much credit for being smart and evil, rather than stupid and evil.

..yeah... probably.

He's not having any conversation. He's dead.
