Pitchfork Doesn’t Need Comments. And Yet …

quote [ The legendary music site’s message board is the broader internet. But apparently, Pitchfork is getting a comments section anyway. ]

I don't see the point to album reviews. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences. Just because someone else likes an album doesn't mean you will, too. The only way to know if you like an album is to listen to it, which is much easier to do now than it used to be.

Personally, I find them helpful in two ways:

1. If I really like an album, sometimes it feels almost social to read someone else's review (like having a distant conversation about a topic of interest)

2. If I am on the fence on checking an album or searching for new content if something really critically shines I am more likely to check it out.

My record label did some creative editing spin on our Pitchfork review for album marketing, received a cease-and-desist letter. Good times.
