The Atlantic: What does ISIS really want?

quote [ Muslims can reject the Islamic State; nearly all do. But pretending that it isn’t actually a religious, millenarian group, with theology that must be understood to be combatted, has already led the United States to underestimate it and back foolish schemes to counter it. We’ll need to get acquainted with the Islamic State’s intellectual genealogy if we are to react in a way that will not strengthen it, but instead help it self-immolate in its own excessive zeal. ]

I don't always like the Atlantic, but I found this an interesting essay on the ideals and logic that rule an organisation that to most of us seems bent on random, psychopathic violence.

I fully expect we'll soon see a committed group of Apocalyptic Christianists launch a murderous attack, to prove their relevance.

I think the Aum Shirinko already did that in Japan. If they identified themselves as followers of Christ, that is.

Sounds to me that there isn't any way of behaving towards Islamic State that won't keep them happy. Anything from full scale war through to ignoring them entirely. Each option would please them in a different way.

"First, we tend to see jihadism as monolithic..."

Only in the same way that "we" see Atheism as Satanic. It takes a real devotion to Fox News and not paying attention at all to actually think that there's a one-size-fits-all flavor of Islam, jihad, etc.

Looks like a good place to drop this little tidbit off.

Quote - "“OK. Where are you at?,” the dispatcher asked.

“I’m sure you can get that off the caller ID,” the man responded. “And I’m going to go out there and just start shooting anything that looks like a Muslim after what they did to France.”

After hanging up, the man called back.

“It’s no emergency. You guys seem to be ignoring me,” he said. “I’m just going to start shooting at cars.”

This really illustrates why people are so scared of Muslims and Islam. Yes, the vast majority of Muslims are moderates and liberal and simply follow a faith. But ISIS/Daesh, Al Quaeda and the Taliban, as well as other flavours of the religion, show it's "true colours".

There's no debating with Islam as set out by Muhammed. There's no getting along with it or living at peace with it, because fundamentally, according to this article it is concerned basically with waging jihads and acting, basically, insane.

Fascinating stuff, and scary.

There's no debating with Christianity as set out by the OT and Paul. Even with the touchy-feely Jesus stuff in the middle, the rest of it is about following the rules or getting put to death.
