Lawrence Lessig & Jack Abramoff are doing an AMA on reddit on the subject of US campaign finance reform

quote [ Hey reddit,

When we launched the first phase of MAYDAY.US, we had a great discussion about the influence of money in our political system.

Now, with three days to go in the second phase of MAYDAY, I'd like to dive into more detail about what exactly our country faces and how it specifically impacts the Internet... ]

MayDay.US is trying to raise $5 million by midnight July 4th to end the influence of big money on US elections. As of this post, they're at $2.6 million. If they make their goal, it'll be matched for a total of $12 million.

Is there a donor level that lets you punch Jack Abramoff in the dick? Because I'd be down for that.

So what's the difference between this and WolfPAC?

Nevermind, figured it out.

Mayday: wants to elect new members of Congress that will agree to pass campaign finance reform upon being elected.

Wolf: wants to amend the Constitution through a state convention.

I want to punch Cenk Uygur in the face?

I know absolutely nothing about the organizers/runners of these PACs. Is the WolfPAC guy a douche?
GordonGuano said @ 5:07pm GMT on 2nd Jul
Eh, no more so than the average guy with a show on the Food Network. And at least he usually keeps it pointed at the bad guys. But I wouldn't want to have a beer with him.

They have very similar goals but their plans of attack are different.. WolfPAC wants to pass an amendment to the Constitution by getting 34 of the 50 states to ratify it in both sides of each state legislature.

MayDayPAC is trying to elevate the issue of campaign finance reform by using crowdfunding to elect a majority to Congress who are committed to fundamental campaign finance reform laws.

I enjoy WolfPAC's delusion that somehow state legislatures aren't as corrupt as their federal equivalent.

I now also enjoy MayDay's delusion that power doesn't corrupt, particularly when you submerge these new allies into the hive of backstabbery that is our legislature.

Mayday's goal is to change the rules on the ground such that the current manner of corruption is severely weakened/ undermined. I'd say that it's a worthy cause.

Plus if they don't hit their, goal, you get all your money back.

AMA on politics on reddit?

No, no thank you.

Which would you rather fuck, a SuperPAC sized Lobbyist or a Lobbyist sized SuperPAC?

That said I appreciate the post.

But I don't know what's worse, watching inpenners clones astroturfing it up or having to search through all the "I just read The Fountainhead and now I'm a libertarian" type posts.

And frankly I don't know if throwing money at a money problem is the best solution. Isn't that like settling a verbal argument with Mike Tyson by offering to box it out for a couple rounds with him and see who the winner is?}

Phone ate my post and logged me out, and when I scrolled back and copy and pasted and relogged in, I didn't clean up the "select all" copy and paste.

A thousand apologies!

Set aside your cynicism for a second and pledge a few bucks :)
lilmookieesquire said @ 7:36pm GMT on 2nd Jul
Perhaps. I'll read through it again and see how transparent it is, because it sounds like trying to put a fire out with gasoline.

But I will give it a look-see.

Just don't think about Jack Abramoff.
artistan said @ 7:09pm GMT on 2nd Jul
The information provided on the page is mediocre at best. If it had a little more information that just a video briefly explaining their plan of attack, and a whole bunch of "Pledge Now" button - I would have been more open to the idea.
artistan said @ 7:11pm GMT on 2nd Jul
Oh look at that it's all in the bottom.

The article I found is too short, so if anyone can make a themed post around this, you're more than welcome:

"Starting today we will also respectfully request that guests not bring firearms to Target – even in communities where it is permitted by law."
GordonGuano said @ 11:38pm GMT on 2nd Jul
Target is now the one corporation I follow on Twitter or like on Facebook because of this. I made sure to let them know. Hell, I might even send them an old-fashioned letter.
sanepride said @ 7:40pm GMT on 2nd Jul
Call me a cynic, but I find the idea of a reformed Jack Abramoff working towards campaign finance reform to be a bit dubious. Maybe it's an 'only Nixon can go to China' thing.
