4chan - The Skeleton Key to the Rise of Trump

quote [ How did we get here? What is 4chan exactly? And how did a website about anime become the avant garde of the far right? Mixed up with fascist movements, international intrigue, and Trump iconography? How do we interpret it all? ]

A little history and context for people who weren't "in the know" from the beginning.

This reads like it was written by a bit of a 4chan fanboy. While I'm sure the Venn diagrams of 4chan, Breitbart and lonely frustrated man-children have a good deal of overlap, that doesn't mean /pol/ had much to do with influencing the outcome of the election.

As a person who has spent way too much time on /pol/ for the past several years trying to understand that shitty culture, it does seem that /pol/ has had some type of influence on the election via the internet (non-normie land).

Essentially, I think a good deal of them were good minions when it came to digital marketing and manipulation. They like skewing internet polls and public perception via comments on social media websites. I still see a tremendous amount of that from them now all over the place. Specifically, for the election, they'd go to conservative websites like the National Review and throw abuse at any repub or conservative who didn't become a Trump believer. They harassed the ever lasting shit out of people like Ben Shapiro and David French. They harassed anyone who didn't fall in line. When David French, Mr. Super Religious Arch-conservative, was saying that he was receiving hundreds of emails about how his black adopted daughter should be hanging from a tree and that he was a cuck, he admitted that there was a problem. He knew they were all this new "alt-right" 4channy people - their juvenile use of anime avatars, pepe imagery, and cuck-language outed them.

Personally, I was even stunned to find an old classmate posting tons of pepe and Trump memes, and then espousing what was essentially a white nationalist viewpoint to people on facebook. Really smart dude, too, living in a very, very liberal city. I see a lot of the culture rubbing off on really young kids too. We can't pretend chan culture hasn't had an effect on even benign things - I mean, look at memes. Specifically, /pol/ is an even more dreadful black hole than 4chan in general, and it is my estimation that it is growing ever larger.

Maybe the contrarians in 4 to 8 years might decide to latch on to a new counter-culture, but this is what we have now.

TL;DR words have power even if you don't mean it.

Real experts have a hard time expressing what the hell happened on this election. And giving /pol/ any kind of credit is pretty ridiculous.
rndmnmbr said @ 9:49pm GMT on 21st Feb
Really? Because I can express it easily: various groups marginalized by the modern world banded together to elect a man they expected, nay, hoped, would burn the world to ashes. Some hoping to start over; most just lashing out in rage and pain.
alloy said @ 2:02am GMT on 22nd Feb
Thats every election. The only difference is Trumps shameless manipulation of that blind rage.

Without bothering to read the article I can tell you why.

4chan's anonymity attracts shit hawks to the shit pond so they can spew their shit without owning it, like cowards.
cakkafracle said @ 1:23am GMT on 22nd Feb
pretty much but you should still read the article. Because I did and I enjoyed it therefore all should and will!

I post stuff here all the time that conflicts with the majority opinion. The anonymity of 4chan doesn't appeal to me for purposes of trolling, it appeals to me because it roots people into forming their thoughts and opinions freely. Something which doesn't happen on reddit or sites like this because people all too frequently become overly concerned with their 'karma' ranking.

This comes at a price yes, but if you can't learn to ignore shameless baiting on the internet by now, then you never will, and should probably just stay off your computer/phone entirely.

You coward.

By the way can someone explain the whole "cuck" thing to me? I don't quite get it.

I know what cuckold porn is, so, is the implication that Liberals are the cuckolds, who enjoy watching .... our country get fucked by......? The blacks???!

Or is it simply a boast, in the sense that nothing could possibly be more beta than a cuckold, and of course, liberals are "beta as fuck" according to the strong hard working right. Right.
cakkafracle said[1] @ 1:22am GMT on 22nd Feb
your assumption that cockolding has to do with black men is a bit too specific

a cuckold is what your wife does to you... proving you're weak and worthless by brazenly getting with other dudes and not worrying that everyone knows. cuz you wont do anything, cuck
cakkafracle said @ 1:25am GMT on 22nd Feb
and the cuckold porn you see is about as legit as "mom and son" or "brother and sister" videos, fantasies for the kink

real cuckolding gets people killed, like on Boogy Nights ... William H Macy epitomized a cuck

I've been a 4channer since the days of the Cockmongler, Happy Negro, and WT Snacks' Banhammer.

A bunch of shit in that article is flat wrong. Especially the stuff concerning gamergate.

To credit 4chan with Trump's success is naive. Internet support != real life support. They're a small, vocal minority, one that most people aren't even aware of.

Now where 4chan did significantly affect the election was with fake news. 4chan would run with some fake factoid, the right-wing alt-news sites would pick them up as "sources" and write fake articles, laundering them for use by Breitbart and Drudge, which would then get picked up by Fox, the NYPost, and all of the "respectable" right-wing news outlets.
