Jian Ghomeshi is Fucked

quote [ Toronto Police said Friday evening it has opened an investigation into allegations of abuse by former CBC host Jian Ghomeshi after complaints made by two women. ]

Ok, so this story has it all... celebrities, sordid sex, accusations, sub texts, rape, consent and why women don't report rape.

For those not aware, Ghomeshi is a media darling, huge following on CBC with his show, Q. His journey to Cancon fame started when he was the drummer with Moxy Fr?vous, then he rose...and rose...and rose.... till he hosted a top rated show in the prime slot on CBC radio once held by St Peter Gzowski... Then the rumours started...his dad died, a short leave of absence followed by a facebook that was frank if not entirely honest. It laid bare his interest in BDSM, and said that in the coming days the we would hear stories from a spurned girlfriend about things, like non consensual acts of violence that were not true. He received lots of support. He hired a top crisis PR firm and a top international legal team. He sued the CBC for $55 million... then the stories from women surfaced...first one, then three, then nine...his PR team bailed...the Police said they could not investigate until there had been a complaint...and voila.

This story has raised numerous issues, BDSM culture, the victimization of women, revenge, rape culture....and so on.

Long story short, the once proud son of the CBC is fucked,

Originally I wasn't sure how to feel about this since Ghomeshi did the smart thing and got in front of the crisis with his narrative. And then suddenly someone came out with explicit allegations and a parade followed suit. It would be horribly unfair to railroad him for liking to choke/hit willing participants in sex and the mentions of him having his teddy bear that he liked to shield from such acts seems like a low blow on his character. However, the stories involving women being punched in the face until their vision blurs and Ghomeshi sending emails freaking out and saying "I'm shaking as I write this" to women who mentioned they may not have been totally participatory in his sex life are pretty damning.

I was initially uninterested because hey, it's the CBC. I read his 'statement' and thought (as I'm sure others would given the context) that he was going to be trumped up on some charges like Julian Assange by some jilted exes.
Then I started reading the (public) statements of some of the women who have come forward about how he treated them and abused them, and my thoughts are more that this guy should see the inside of jail for a while.

However, that requires charges to be laid and filed in court, and I still think having all of this tried 'in the public domain' before in a courthouse is pretty sad.

Total sidebar - the NFL folks that have been the visual focal point for domestic abuse (which is bad, don't get me wrong) - are they getting worse treatment than various A-list celebrities who have a history of domestic abuse because a) they're Black, b) they're not film stars, or c) both? Is Ghomeshi getting a trial in the public because he's Brown? Or put another way, if the male character in this drama were played by a WASP-y male, would it get the same coverage? I certainly hope (for Canada) that the answer is "yes".

d) Because that football player was caught on camera punching his wife.

True, but Mel Gibson is still making movies (though a lot less).

Public opinion is too important a weapon in sexual assault cases. For the most part they're a matter of "he said she said" so establishing your character and destroying that of the other side is something you have to do. Tying in to your other point, I think the current climate of the dialogue regarding rape is kryptonite for Ghomeshi. I don't think his race is nearly as important as the fact that he's rich, influential, and cock-sure of himself. Too many people have come forward for him to escape in-tact even if it just means he becomes too much of pariah to enjoy the limelight ever again. If there's anything legally tenable I think he'll fall about as hard as a rich and influential man can.

This may sound stupid, but thanks for reminding me he is brown. It didn't occur to me to think about media response in relation to race on this one. I may have been distracted by how much he looks like a younger David Duchovny.
rhesusmonkey said @ 7:42pm GMT on 2nd Nov
As I said, I would like to believe that the Canadian public at large is colour-blind on this particular case as the alleged actions are grotesque regardless of the individual's heritage. And certainly the ethnicity of any of the victims has not come up as a factor (or even relevant).

I guess I am just still a bit put out by the (IMO perceived) disparity in MSM coverage on domestic abuse for the NFL players versus some other recent cases involving rich, white men, and wondering if the coverage in this case is suffering from the same. I don't have a recent / related case in Canada to compare against. Which I guess is a good thing?
Resurrected Morris said @ 12:56pm GMT on 2nd Nov
I believe race is a non-issue here. He is Canadian, full stop.
rhesusmonkey said @ 7:08pm GMT on 2nd Nov
Which is what I generally like about Canada, in that while there is a wide range of skin tones and nationalities that have emigrated into Canada, the general view (at least in the more urban areas) is that everyone is "Canadian", not "Something-Canadian"; aka the 'Mosaic versus Melting Pot". In fact, the latter tends to be applied now more in relation to cases where someone is an immigrant, actually has dual citizenship, and has been caught doing something rather un-Canadian. Like it's the "No True Scotsman" idea writ large, in that anyone who would act in that manner clearly isn't a "True" Canadian and therefore needs to be hyphenated.

Hey, don't get me wrong. If he was a fundy mulslim CBC host, the story would have a different hue

It's like Canadian TMZ: Celebrity gossip that no one gives a single fuck aboot.
MadMarchHarris said @ 3:28pm GMT on 1st Nov [Score:1 Insightful]
Celebrity gossip is fucking pointless. A legal case where a celebrity potentially committed multiple cases of sexual assault and at least implicitly used his fame, influence, and money to shut up his victims has an audience regardless of whether or not the mindless gawkers of the Perez Hilton ilk are crowding to click-bait articles about it.

You mean, aside from the nine women who allege they were beaten by him.

Then you might want to go easy on the schadenfreude and the gushing over the story "having it all... celebrities, sordid sex..."
