I live next to York and have both worked there and gone there for two degrees.
It doesn't surprise me. It's unusual, but just doesn't surprise me. I have no idea what the tunnel might have been used for - heck it could be an excavation of the people digging the subway there so they can avoid the commute to work. Is it probably a bit of terrorism or something leading up to it? I doubt it. It isn't even actually going under the buildings. - just weird.
