First in-flight firing of Virgin Galactic spaceplane engine

quote [ Virgin Galactic's tourist-carrying spaceplane has taken a step closer to entering service after its chemical rocket engine was fired for the first time in the skies over the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. With test pilots Mark "Forger" Stucky and Dave Mackay at the controls, the 60-ft-long (18 m) SpaceShipTwo VSS Unity pegged the speedometer at Mach 1.87 (1,424 mph, 2,290 km/h) within 30 seconds of igniting its engine. ]

These pilots train on a flight sim, but man, that rush when you light it up.

Follow-up to this post from 2014, about a fatal crash during a test.

You know, in The Devil Went Down to Georgia, the Devil is respectful and courteous to Johnny, and humble in his defeat. And he is completely honest with Johnny about Johnny's chances of winning the bet, even before Johnny accepts it. Johnny on the over hand exhibits avarice and pride, and talks shit to the devil, who is shown to be just doing his job.

Who's the real villain here?

The Devil's just playing the long game. Plenty of young hotshots like Johnny learn to embrace humility as they mature, but what better way to tempt someone into a life of sinful pride than to make them think they beat the Devil himself?

Makes me glad Toys'R'Us chose the song they did.

If they'd gone with Waits' proposal, I bet they'd still be in business.

Johnny's just a kid, he has no concept of what it means for the Devil to get your soul. He's cocky, but a fiddle player can't have self-doubt and still aspire to greatness.

The Devil's just a concept, he has no kid of what it means for Johnny to get a fiddle made of gold.

Almost worked. :-)

The soul's just a concept. Johnny will have a devil of a time trying to play a fiddle made of gold.

Bread pans are just a concept. The dough represents our lifespan that is inexorably pecked away by the chickens of death.

Every chicken dies. Not every chicken really lives.

I do appreciate that the Primus version eschews the racist dog whistle of the original that makes The Devil's part "funky".

The original always bothered me as a kid because the Devil's part sounded so much cooler that it didn't make sense for him to lose.

I thought the Devil's baseline and guitar were awesome, but his fiddle playing sucked.
