Just what we needed.

quote [ Revelations that Federal Reserve Gov. Lael Brainard donated to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign has created a tough situation for the central bank, at a time when Donald Trump has been accusing the Fed of making policy based on political bias. ]

Sure, it's a small donation, but when Hillary is trying to distance herself from the establishment, it couldn't come at a worse time.

This is a much bigger issue for the Fed (which is supposed to be politically neutral) than it is for Hillary.

Not really since Hilary is running for President.
sanepride said @ 4:10pm GMT on 30th Sep
You're right, it's not really a big issue for anybody, except maybe Trump.

Brainard? Really?

I'm getting Warner Bros flashbacks...

"Gee, Brainard, what do you wanna do tonight?"
"The same thing we try to do every night, Pinkman: Take over the world (by donating for Hillary's presidential campaign)!"
sanepride said @ 4:54pm GMT on 30th Sep
Well she is already an influential Federal Reserve Governor, and a top contender for a President Clinton's Secretary of the Treasury. So by some measures, she really could take over the world.

What, because she works at the Federal Reserve she loses her right to participate in the political process like any other voter? I mean, I think we ought to have publicly funded elections, but as things stand, anyone's allowed to donate to whatever campaign they want. It's specifically allowed under Federal Reserve bylaws dictating allowable types of political involvement. I literally do not see why anybody who has the faintest idea of how our electoral system works would object to this. Of course, that category excludes Trump and his supporters, so...

As a federal employee, you lose some ability to participate in the political process, per the Hatch Act.
sanepride said @ 8:01pm GMT on 30th Sep
Assuming FRB Governors are covered by the Hatch Act, it does not prohibit federal employees from making donations to political campaigns.

I was mostly responding to Dalilama's comment about losing the right to participate in the political process as if it was something uncommon. But you are correct: the Hatch Act does not prohibit federal employees from making donations, and political appointees are not held to its provisions.

Behold the rules governing political involvement by members of the board of the Federal Reserve. I direct you to Paragraph 4, second sentence.

Well, that settles it. I'm sure we won't hear another word about it.

Oh, I'm sure we will, but I just wanted to establish that, like pretty much everything republicans lose their shit about, it's a made-up issue.

Isn't the Federal Reserve an autonomous entity that works with the government, and not a part of the government itself?
