quote [ The Arizona senator was diagnosed with brain cancer last year
“Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news that our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious,” the McCain family said in a statement Friday. “In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival. But the progress of disease and inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment.” ]

I always liked John McCain. He was our Senator when I live in AZ. The only politician I ever wrote to, and, after listening to stories of people who wrote their own senators and congresscritters, maybe one of the very few who responded to people personally with something that was NOT the standard form letter.
Anyway - heres one of the old classics Badass Of The Week - John McCain |

I don't agree with him much politically but he has served with honor and conviction. I believe he was truly trying to do right and not just right for himself. And as they say sin boldly. I never voted for him but I feel like the GOP is losing a true titan. God rest his soul.

McCain Dies on 8-25-2018
As stated earlier. I liked McCain, but, I am neither stupid nor blind to his policies and legacy - he often used his privilege and power to harm the poor and oppressed. He was indeed a war hero, and had moments of goodness, but his actions on behalf of the rich and powerful made it very clear that he was not a decent man. I am not into grave-dancing by any stretch, but neither am I going to canonize the guy either. His support for Prop 8 in California, DADT and other homophobic positions harmed and alienated many of my gay and lesbian friends and family. Then there were the numerous racist comments, his record on women’s rights and abortion, and that whole MLK day thing. While very charismatic, he supported policies that embraced his racist homophobic and sexist positions. He was a warmonger, who often joked in press conferences about bombing other countries. Was he as bad as many of his GOP colleagues? Of course not! I will never claim he was, even though for a “rebelâ€, he was shockingly (over 80%) aligned with Trump on his voting record. RIP John - I really hope you find the peace you are looking for wherever you end up in the hereafter. |

He was highly skilled at destroying US aircraft - I forget whether he crashed 4 or 5 multi-million-dollar fighters. That said, while McCain may have been a shitty pilot, I agree with HoZay about my grudging admiration for him. At least he called a spade a spade, and Trump a liar.
EDIT: I stand corrected. McCain lost 2 aircraft due to pilot error or being shot down; 1 to an indetermined-cause engine failure; 1 to a freak accident. The fifth "crash" was not a crash at all, though 'daredevil flying' was involved. I stand by my grudging admiration for the man AS a man. |

Most pilots don't even walk away from one plane crash. If you survive more than one and they still keep giving you planes to fly, you've got to be doing something right.

Being the son of an admiral might have something to do with it.

He is brave for stopping treatment. Knowing death is coming like that is literally a nightmare of mine.
That said, bye bye, John, you mavericky maverick. As the Benny Hill song so succinctly put,"You can tell a man who boozes by the company he chooses" and he chose to associate with the right wing war faction, right up until public opinion shifted and it might cost him something. Sad that any human dies like this. May he get the eternal reward he has earned. |

I disagree with him on just about everything, but I sure hate to lose him.
