quote [ Age comes with the benefit of wisdom, and often the difficulty of extremely limited mobility. When a person is unable to leave the house, every little gesture helps. Sending a special wish for a birthday can place a well-deserved smile on the person’s face. This is a time to enjoy everything available including birthdays. A lot of people have no idea what wishes to send. This is why the collection of messages below has been created. ]

quote [ Now and then, especially at night, solitude loses its soft power and loneliness takes over. I am grateful when solitude returns. ]
Sometimes I feel the need to re-post stories from goodshit because they lack proper links to the well deserving original source. Here is one such. I really should just stop reading goodshit all together, but he is a good curator, if a rather half-assed, crappy creditor to the actual content creators.

quote [ Has our culture’s obsession with innovation led us to neglect the fact that things also need to be taken care of? ]
Here's a good Freakonomics episode that was just rebroadcast. This subject has come up here on SE a few times over the last few months. My career(s) have been pretty evenly split between the two extreme ends of the maintenance/innovation spectrum. The AEON Magazine article that sparks much of the conversation is in the Extended. Main link takes you to the full Freakonomics podcast transcript, as well as an audio link if you'd rather listen to it.

quote [ Fleetwood Mac's second album after the incorporation of Buckingham and Nicks, 1977's Rumours, produced four U.S. Top 10 singles (including Nicks' song "Dreams"), and remained at No.1 on the American albums chart for 31 weeks, as well as reaching the top spot in various countries around the world. ]
A young guy at my office had never heard Tusk before, and was only vaguely aware of Fleetwood Mac. I LOVED this song when it came out. I was ten. I listen to it again every few years and it still gives me chills. Plus, Stevie Nicks skipping and twirling a baton is to die for. What more could you want? As a public service, I'm posting it as a quickie.

quote [ “The ruling means that the rights to the film belong to Alfama. Any exploitation of the film up until now has been completely illegal and without the authorization of Alfama,” said Branco, in an interview with Screen Daily. “We will be seeking damages with interest from all the people involved in this illegal production and above all, all those who were complicit in its illegal exploitation. We’re holding everyone responsible.” ]
Worst case, a pristine 4k torrent suddenly becomes available, from an "unknown source." Gilliam just had a stroke a few weeks ago; I doubt he gives a flying fuck through a rolling doughnut what Paulo Branco thinks he owns. Case summary in extended.

quote [ Pollan’s initial skepticism and general lack of hipness work wonders for the material. The problem with more enthusiastic or even hallucinatory writers on the subject is that they just compound the zaniness at the heart of the thing; it’s all too much of the same tone, like having George Will walk you through the tax code. ]
I'll start listening to this as an audiobook on my commute in the next few days. I've read several of his books, and deeply enjoyed them, as well as seen him speak a few times. There's a link to a recent interview about the book with Michael Pollan by Sam Harris in the extended, along with a few of my own thoughts. NYT text also in extended.

quote [ Our society is starved for compassion, gratitude, spirituality, and connection. Psychedelics can help....The end of all this may not be the end of the U.K. or the end of the E.U., but the demise (largely deserved) of the Tory Party....It is so strange to me how so many nonbelievers can see in this Pope’s interaction with others the spirit of Jesus, and how so many of the most devout seem terrified by it. ]
These are the three topics from Sullivan's current New York Magazine column, not, "Three things we should say yes to." I saw Sullivan speak with Sam Harris a few months ago in DC. Since then, I've been following his writing. I don't always agree with him, but I do appreciate his carefully considered ideas.

quote [ The veteran director is said to be recovering well in London as court rules against producer attempting to prevent film festival screening. ]
On a related note, today's episode of 99% Invisible, about how doctors tell their patients bad news, included interviews with John Cleese (who is fine) and mentions of Terry Jones, who sadly is suffering from dementia. Link in extended.
